According to Professor Xue Ju Fu, insomnia can be cateorgised as:

- Easily falling asleep but difficulty to go back to sleep after waking up during the early hours of the evening
- Easily awake coupled with sleep-like status; lack of deep-sleep; semi-lucid condition; a subjective feeling of wakefulness; fatigue after hours of sleep
- Sleep-filled dreams without much recollection; or dreams correlated with events during the day such as worry, fear and stress. All of which can provide important clues to the TCM practitioner
